Who we are and what we do...

Shankill Action for a Green Earth – SAGEwas formed by a group of likeminded individuals from the Shankill community in July 2015. Since its inception, we have had monthly meetings of the group to discuss and plan activities and ideas. There is a core group of eight people at the heart of this, and we always welcome new ideas and members.

SAGE’s objectives are to raise awareness amongst Shankill residents of environmental issues, climate change and our responsibilities as citizens to take action to counter these. Such actions would primarily be personal, and community based but also aimed at influencing national policies in relation to our responsibilities as a nation to play our part in the global effort to mitigate the impact of climate change.

Shankill is a coastal village in south-east Dublin, consisting of approximately 5300 residential properties, some small businesses, a hospital, several churches and a number of social amenities such as the tennis club. SAGE has estimated the energy spend within the area to be €24,007,580. Domestic energy usage makes up approximately 49% of this spend while 48% is transport related and the final 3% is related to the business of the area.

Our estimates show that Shankill households are spending over €11 million on energy consumption and, according to EU research, behavioural interventions alone can realise up to 20% savings on this figure. This reduction in energy consumption is great news for your pocket and the environment.

You can keep informed on our activities on Twitter, Facebook and through Shankill’s community magazine, SCAN.
